Carawatha – A creative hideaway in the Byron Bay hinterland

“It’s a beautiful home that transforms you,” was what the current owner of Carawatha answered when asked to describe this lovely five bedroom property, and judging from the setting and looks of this handsome cottage estate and its history of fostering creativity, that is an apt description.Carawatha is a home with enchanting charm

Down a  quiet country road in Eureka,  just a short drive from the charming villages of Clunes and Federal, and about half an hour from the beaches and excellent restaurants, relaxed shopping and eclectic nightlife of Byron Bay, Carawatha engages body and mind with its old world country charm.

Built in 1907 by a prominent local family and lived in for generations, it was bought by a well-known interior designer who made creative use of the space before selling to Australian music icon Pete Murray and his partner, who continued to use Carawatha as an inspirational workplace and home with over $300,000 in renovations including the installation of a professional recording studio and design studio. Pete’s album Summer in Eureka reflects life in Carawatha.

Cosy, country kitchen at CarawathaSet within almost five tranquil acres, Carawatha includes the main house and three additional buildings – the recording and editing studio, a two room studio and a large shed that has been converted into a council approved rental property. A large paddock and plenty of garden space makes Carawatha a self-sustaining country paradise.

The main house features warm cosy living areas opening onto spacious shaded verandas with lovely views, a master bedroom with modern ensuite, a bright, cheerful, functional kitchen and richly finished timber floors and highlights.

The soundproofed, climate controlled recording studio lends itself to a variety of purposes, and while the potential of the other spaces are truly limitless, Carawatha is an inviting home just as it is. Well over $300,000 in renovations were completed with an artist’s eye for aesthetics and a professional’s need for functionality.
